Logistics provide GXO announced the successful implementation of a large-scale robotics system in Europe for a major sporting goods retailer. This new system speeds up order processing, adapts quickly to changes in seasonal demand, and saves money, representing a big improvement in the retailer’s supply chain management.
“This tote-to-person solution, integrated with high-density storage, enables high-volume picking, storage, and operating efficiency in our warehouse,” said Rui Marques, Managing Director, France, GXO. “We’re always looking to leverage technologies that solve our customers’ increasingly complex global supply chain problems.”
GXO is taking care of more of the retailer's logistics in Europe, using new automation to handle the rising demand. This unique system covers 12,000 square meters and uses around 500 robots to manage 70,000 bins on tall storage racks. These robots have greatly increased productivity, accuracy, and safety at the warehouse.
Adrian Stoch, Chief Automation Officer at GXO, highlighted the global effort involved in this implementation. “The success here is a reflection of the power and scale of our global team, where we have leveraged expertise and resources across our global network to support this first-time implementation in a new market. Our operations-first approach to solution design has been instrumental in solving our customer’s challenges and furthering their strategic objectives.”
The lightweight AMRs are designed for easy transport and installation, providing GXO with the flexibility to quickly relocate them within the warehouse or deploy them to other facilities to accommodate seasonal changes. This flexibility ensures that the warehouse can maintain high levels of efficiency and responsiveness throughout the year.
In 2023, GXO increased its total technology and automated systems by approximately 50% year over year. The company is also accelerating the deployment of machine learning and artificial intelligence to further enhance productivity gains from automation. GXO’s industry-leading automation and technology are helping to boost safety and productivity for customers globally.
