Malaysia To Construct Its First AI-Driven Container Port on West Coast

The $425 million project will enhance operational efficiency and connectivity to key industrial regions

Malaysia is set to construct a state-of-the-art container port along the west coast of the Malay Peninsula, facing the busy Strait of Malacca. Valued at an estimated $425 million, this new port will incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance operational efficiency, marking the first port in Malaysia to apply such advanced technology. The strategic location near Kuala Lumpur and the midpoint of the Malacca Strait positions the port to benefit from high maritime traffic and connectivity to key industrial regions in Malaysia.

Earlier this month, Tanco Holdings Bhd (THB), through its subsidiary Midports Holdings Sdn Bhd (MHSB), signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with CCCC Dredging (Group) Co Ltd (CCCC Dredging), a subgroup of China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC). This collaboration aims to develop Malaysia’s first smart AI container port in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan state. The project will cover approximately 809,300 square meters and include a wharf, a terminal, and a 1.8 km long container operating area.

AI technology is anticipated to revolutionize port operations by minimizing human errors, reducing accident rates, and improving overall efficiency. The AI system will analyze traffic data, schedule ship movements, monitor maritime activities, and manage logistics automatically. This innovation is expected to set a new standard in port management, significantly enhancing Malaysia's logistical capabilities.

Tanco Group Managing Director Andrew Tan Juan Suan stated that the construction of this port aligns with Malaysia's goal of establishing a modern and efficient port hub. This initiative is expected to accelerate economic development in Negeri Sembilan and strengthen Malaysia's position in global trade.

Negeri Sembilan state Chief Minister Aminuddin Harun highlighted the port's potential to significantly boost Malaysia's logistics and shipping industry. The port will be well-connected to major industrial zones through a comprehensive network of roads and highways, further enhancing its logistical advantages.

This development comes amid other major expansions in Malaysia's port infrastructure, including plans to double the capacity of Port Klang, Malaysia's largest port.
