At the Gartner Supply Chain Symposium/Xpo in Barcelona, analysts presented strategies for supply chain and procurement leaders to address long-term resource constraints by focusing on immediate business risks.
According to new research from Gartner, effective supply chains motivate action by addressing urgent, tangible issues rather than directly mitigating long-term constraints. This approach helps in finding solutions to long-term limitations.
Gartner's research, based on a January 2024 survey of 143 supply chain leaders, highlighted the top resource constraints threatening business viability. The findings suggest leveraging short-term impacts to gain stakeholder buy-in, thereby designing solutions that address both current and future constraints, such as labor, raw materials, and capacity, which are expected to worsen due to climate change.
“It’s difficult to motivate action on long-term constraints when leaders are focused on the clear and present dangers in front of them,” said Laura Rainier, Senior Director Analyst at Gartner Supply Chain Practice. “Rather than wait for a mandate that may never come, supply chain leaders can work with the short-term pressures facing the organization to design solutions today that will address both current and future constraints.”
Motivate Action by De-Prioritizing Long-Term Constraints: Focus on addressing short-term risks to generate action and obtain investments and stakeholder buy-in.
Reprioritize Long-Term Constraints to Design Solutions: Engage with stakeholders to design products that consider both present and future constraints, aiming for more sustainable and viable products.
