U.S. rail carload and intermodal volumes are mixed, for week ending June 22, reports AAR
United States rail carload and intermodal volumes were mixed, for the week ending June 22, according to data issued this week by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).
Rail carloads, at 220,096, were down 0.8% annually, trailing the week ending January 15, at 222,759, and topping the week ending June 8, at 218,234.
AAR reported that five of the 10 carload commodity groups it tracks saw annual gains, including: grain, up 2,851 carloads, to 17,495; chemicals, up 1,890 carloads, to 31,807; and farm products excl. grain, and food, up 1,792 carloads, to 16,878. Commodity groups posting annual declines included: coal, down 4,442 carloads, to 58,555; miscellaneous carloads, down 1,676 carloads, to 8,688; and metallic ores and metals, down 1,309 carloads, to 21,108.
Intermodal containers and trailers, at 265,461 units, increased 7.5% annually, trailing the weeks ending June 15 and June 8, at 270,379, and 271,682, respectively.
Through the first 25 weeks of 2024, AAR reported that U.S. rail carloads, at 5,344,599, were off 4.7% annually, and intermodal units, at 6,375,986, headed up 8.8% annually.
