United States rail carload and intermodal volumes, for the week ending June 15, according to data issued this week by the Association of American Railroads (AAR).
Rail carloads, at 222,759, fell 2.5% annually, topping the weeks ending June 8 and June 1, at 218,234, and 206,236, respectively.
AAR reported that five of the 10 carload commodity groups it tracks saw annual gains, including: chemicals, up 3,351 carloads, to 33,137; grain, up 3,319 carloads, to 19,150; and petroleum and petroleum products, up 951 carloads, to 11,046. Commodity groups posting annual declines included: coal, down 10,024 carloads, to 56,064; nonmetallic minerals, down 3,299 carloads, to 31,197; and metallic ores and metals, down 841 carloads, to 21,227.
Intermodal containers and trailers, at 270,379 units, saw an 8.9% annual gain, trailing the week ending June 8, at 271,682, and topping the week ending June 1, at 243,841.
Through the first 24 weeks of 2024, AAR reported that U.S. rail carloads, at 5,124,503, were off 4.9% annually, and intermodal units, at 6,110,525, headed up 8.8% annually.
