The Top Five Large and Small U.S. Manufacturing Hubs of 2024

The 20th Annual Rankings Report by Business Facilities highlights these cities' strong labor pools, manufacturing space growth, and strategic advantages

Phoenix and Austin have been named the leading manufacturing hubs in the 20th Annual Rankings Report by Business Facilities, a top resource for business relocation and expansion decisions. The rankings, set to be published in the July/August 2024 issue, list top locations for manufacturing based on labor pool, employment, and manufacturing space growth.

Phoenix/Mesa/Chandler secured first place among large manufacturing hubs. This metro area earned the top spot due to its strong workforce and plentiful industrial space. Its strategic location and business-friendly environment have attracted numerous investments, establishing it as a leading center for manufacturing.

Other large metros making the top 10 list include Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington, TX; Philadelphia/Camden/Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE; Detroit/Warren/Dearborn, MI; and Atlanta/Sandy Springs/Roswell, GA. These areas are noted for their strong manufacturing sectors, skilled labor pools, and ongoing investments in industrial infrastructure.

In the small metro category, Austin/Round Rock/San Marcos, TX, came out on top. Austin's booming tech scene and new industrial projects have made it a standout location for smaller-scale operations. The city's skilled workforce and supportive economic policies have created an environment that encourages growth in this sector.

Joining Austin in the top 10 small manufacturing hubs are Columbus, OH; Cincinnati, OH; Grand Rapids, MI; Elkhart, IN; and Greenville, SC. These metros have demonstrated excellence in manufacturing employment, space expansion, and overall industry growth.

“The Business Facilities Annual Rankings Report is a valuable resource for decision-makers pursuing their next business relocation or expansion investment. The locations on our metro, state, and global rankings lists this year are leading the way in attracting business by providing the resources companies are looking for in today’s economic landscape,” said Anne Cosgrove, Business Facilities Editorial Director.

The 2024 report helps demonstrate the importance of manufacturing hubs in driving economic growth and innovation. With cities like Phoenix and Austin setting the standard, the future of manufacturing in the U.S. looks promising, offering a wealth of opportunities for both businesses and workers.
